Are you 13 or older? Did you know that you can be paid* to umpire baseball games for SOM Baseball?

South Orange-Maplewood Baseball provides training for youth umpires to prepare them to officiate SOM Baseball recreation league games for Minors, Majors, and Babe Ruth leagues (players ages 9-15). Anyone who will be 13 years of age as of April 30, 2025 is eligible to take this Cadet Youth Umpire Training course.

While training is provided, candidates must have a knowledge of the game and basic rules of baseball. Completion of the Cadet Umpire class will allow umpires to work with previously trained umpires. Umpires who are under 14 are not paid. However, umpires who complete the Cadet program will receive an increased rate when they enter the Beginner Umpire Training program in the next baseball season.

For more information about the program please see the Youth Umpire Training page.

Register on the South Orange Recreation website under “Baseball / Softball – Clinics, Lessons & Instruction”

*13 year old umpires are not paid. However, 13 year olds that successfully complete training will receive an increased starting rate when they turn 14.
